  1. I love these building sculptures. I think they really add charm and whimsy to a building and also allow observers a glimpse into the architect’s fun side.

    A lot of them are roof drains or waterspouts to move the rain water away from the building. Anything with an open mouth or other opening is probably a waterspout.

    Many of the cathedrals have great images. There’s an ancient bridge in Paris that is covered in gargoles.

    They are called gargoyles only if they have drainage function. If not, they are called himeras and they have only ornamental value.
